Grand Prix, Gray Days, and Is this Yellow???

AWANA Grand Prix
This was Rooi's first opportunity to participate in the AWANA Grand Prix. For those of you who don't know what it is (not that I'm all that informed myself), the T&T kids put their own wooden cars together, paint and decorate them, put weights under the front of them, etc., then race against each other.

And they're off!
Ethan Barnes competed against Roo the first go round....he had quite the lead!
And the final score........

Roo placed 2nd in each race throughout the night! Yay ROO!!!! You go girl!

Okay....2nd part of this post. Do you ever get headaches on "gray" days? I can't stand them. Tylenol, ibuprofrin, nothing helps. Sometimes it is almost migraine level. Winter is FULL of gray days. Ick. I don't like cold days, either, unless they are spent in front of a warm fire with books or crafts, or maybe the occasional good movie, and a cup of coffee, hot tea or cocoa. Basically, if I don't have to leave the house, I'm good on cold days. :0)
About 6 months ago I was given a gift certificate to Lowe's, so I used to buy some paint. I talked about it for so long that dh finally gave in to a shade of yellow, just so long as I would finally do it, LOL! Needless to say, I just put up the first coat on the first small wall today. I chose the yellow in hopes that it would brighten those dark/gray days and keep spirits high (and headaches low). The only thing is....I'm not sure it LOOKS yellow on the walls!? Ugh.
What do you think?

Is it yellow? Hmmmmm.....not as much as I'd hoped, but probably better for my not-so-yellow-loving-husband. I guess we'll see. I plan on working in some of the green that we painted the hall/office with, and maybe a pale color on one of the other walls. So, seriously, does that look yellow?

From the picture, it looks like and "antique" yellow... sort of a parchment color. Still...very pretty and soothing.

I think that is exactly what my husband was afraid of! He said, and I quote, "Yellow always looks old...antiquey." Oy! I was going for "sunny" yet not overpowering. Hmmmm.....

Thanks for the input! :0)

I like the color. To make it "pop" you can always paint the trim in white, or maybe even just tape and paint a brilliant white narrow border around that will make it much brighter. I either case, it will give the appearance of a panel, which looks nice.

Light colors always enhanced or diminished by the colors that surround them and you want to bounce more light off the yellow...hence the white border.

Ahhhh! Thank you SO much Mr. Redneck! :0) I have never had the nerve to paint or try to decorate my home because I just stink at knowing anything about stuff like that! I'll be painting the trim white....thanks to your advice!!! :0)

I'll be anxious to see the outcome. Are you planning to paint the wall to the right also?

Yes...in fact I already have the first coat on. I was going to paint the second coat today, then take a pic of both walls, and some others. Hubby says we need to paint the wall with the fireplace insert a darker color because it will get smoked/yellowed with the fires we burn throughout the winter. ??? I have no idea what color to paint it, so thought I'd post the pics, then ask for all opinions! :0)

Jerri, you know I love yellow!! (And every other bright color!)
If you plan to hang a large picture, you could also do a thick white mat. Looks very nice on yellow.

Yeah, for the derby car. You got much better pictures than I did of Ethan's. :-)

I agree with Trish that is looks more like parchment than yellow... but yellows don't always photograph the way they look in person. My living room is yellow and always looks like a very different shade in pictures. My favorite yellow is "melted butter" but it is a Behr paint from home depot. Also... yellows can take several coats to reach their "true" shade. Perhaps a second (or third) coat will deepen the color!
I, like you, LOVE yellow! I love that you just jumped in and DID it!

You are SO right! I added a 3rd coat and it definitely looks more yellow. Also, I am going to paint the trim (wide) that goes around the bottom half white, which will help it pop (thanks Gimped!). I found some white sheer curtains to go over the dark wood shades that I picked that will also accentuate the yellow and make it look brighter. Now, the next dilemma....my husband thinks we need to paint the wall with the fireplace insert a darker color since it will get smoked from burning fires. Hmmmm....the opposite wall already needs to be a shade of green to match the hall, which is Green Peppercorn. I'll have to take some pics and post them so I can get some more ideas from you all...great advice!!!! Thanks so much!

One thing you can do is prime the wall with a white primer coat first. It costs around $11 a gallon versus the higher cost of paint. It will also get you to the true color of the paint usually with only one coat.

As far as matching the hall green...Let the hall speak for itself and let the "yellow" room be yellow. If you really want to tie them together just pull in some green accessories.

but...I don't like transition...will take a shock every time. . .

I used KILZ primer before painting. We have to use that because all our sheetrock walls are pre-papered. Ick and ugh, but it's a fact. Anyway...the name of the color is Sunshine something or other....LOL....will have to look it up...now where is that can? ;-)

The wall of the hallway meets the front door, which has a little wall space above it....still trying to figure out what shade to paint it. I'm afraid if I did the whole room in yellow I'd get a migraine every time we turned on the light, LOL!
